Accessibility
Eldercraft is built for people in their sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties first. Everyone else benefits from the same design. This is what we commit to — and what to do if we miss the mark.
Standards we work to
We target WCAG 2.2 Level AA across the whole site, with selected Level AAA criteria where they materially help older users (notably text spacing, contrast, and target size).
Built in from day one
- Variable text size — four levels, up to 26px body, persisted between visits. Use the toolbar at the top of every page.
- Three colour palettes — warm default, high-contrast light, and high-contrast dark. No information is conveyed by colour alone.
- Generous touch targets — every interactive control is at least 48×48 pixels.
- Keyboard navigation — every action is reachable without a mouse, with a visible "skip to content" link.
- Screen-reader friendly — semantic HTML, descriptive labels, live regions for status messages.
- Plain language — short sentences, no jargon, no auto-playing media.
- Read aloud — every page has a "Read this page" button in the toolbar at the top. It reads the page content in a clear human voice for people with low vision, dyslexia, or anyone who'd rather listen.
- Dictate instead of type — the longer text boxes (your story, your craft) have a "Dictate" button. Tap, speak, tap again, and we'll fill in the text for you.
What we're still working on
- Full New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and Auslan video summaries on key safeguarding pages.
- Te Reo Māori and simplified Pacific-language translations of core flows.
- A printable large-print quick-start guide for mentors who prefer paper.
